Sculpture, large and small, grandeur and modesty, side by side on the Lange Voorhout, The Hague

Outside: Grandeur
On the Lange Voorhout in The Hague, you can visit the yearly, summertime, open air exhibition of sculpture. The Hague Sculpture and Museum Beelden aan Zee present a large exhibition of contemporary French sculpture from 6 June to 31 August, titled Grandeur.

Monumental artwork will be displayed on the Lange Voorhout in The Hague’s city centre and other satellite locations. Some 25 contemporary artists who make monumental works were chosen for the exhibition of 2014, of contemporary French sculpture on the Lange Voorhout. The exhibition offers an overview of large-sized art in public spaces today in France.

Featured artists include Adel Abdessemed, Cyrille André, Guillaume Castel, Yuhsin U Chang, Stéphanie Cherpin, Daniel Firman, Vincent Ganivet, Emmanuelle Lainé, Laurent le Deunff, Vincent Mauger, Vincent Olinet, Bruno Peinado, Julien Prévieux, Marie-Hélène Richard and Samuel Yal.
Expertly guided tours of The Hague Sculpture are available throughout the summer in English, Dutch and French. Visit the website for guided tours: rondleidingen.net, with an English page, for more information.

Inside: Grandeur and Modesty
Pulchri Studio is an artist-run gallery, located on the Lange Voorhout, in the beautiful and historic centre of The Hague. Pulchri Studio offers visitors the chance to see and buy an exciting range of paintings, sculptures, photographs and other works of art.

Artists, Pulchri members, show their work in seven different spaces, set over two floors. On average Pulchri Studio hosts 50 exhibitions a year, so there is always something new to see every time you visit!

On June 28, 2014 an exhibition of small art will be opened, “Een beeld van een penning”. Pulchri members in cooperation with the VPK, the Vereniging voor Penningkunst / the Dutch Society for Art Medals will present medallic art. Perhaps you are not familiar with art medals, an art form in The Netherlands of an exceptional high standard. Collecting art medals is often confused with coin collecting, but that confusion should not longer exist after visiting this exhibition.
Admission is free of charge and Pulchri is open six days a week from Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 till 17.00 hours.

Address Pulchri Studio:
Lange Voorhout 15, 2514 EA Den Haag
or their website: pulchri.nl

And a very helpfull site about Dutch medallic art, with clear explanation in English, is made by Lucie Nijland: artmedal.wordpress.com

Outside: Modesty

Modesty should also be of importance for the writer of this blog. Sorry, but that’s too hard, because my love for Dutch medallic art is huge ! Being a dealer with that love, I have the urgent need to present art medals, every sunday on the open air Antique and Book market on the Lange Voorhout during summertime.

A special love are the art medals issued by Pulchri Studio in the 1950 and 1960-ies. Made by important Pulchri members, such as Albert Termote, Dirk Bus, Bram Roth, Aart van den IJssel, Jan Snoeck and Rudi Rooijackers.

Those medals are known as Maecenas Penning Pulchri Studio, and were given to a small group of benefactors of Pulchri.

Once in a while other standholders on the market will also offer art medals, you could find beautiful French or Belgium art nouveau medals, historic or commemorative medals, art deco or modern medallic art.

And because my modesty has completely vanished during the writing of this blog, I would like to mention my site, with a modest collection of medallic art:

July 6, a new Guest on the Antique and Bookmarket The Hague: Paul Berkhout, restorer

Each first Sunday of a month, during the 2014 summer season of the The Hague Antiques and Book market on the Lange Voorhout, you will find two Guest Stalls. We have invited persons and businesses to attend a market stall for a day.
Sponsors are the Municipal of The Hague and the company who delivers the booths, Marktbedrijf Post. They have offered their full and free of charge collaboration to these events.
On Sunday, July 6, we proudly present:

Paul Berkhout, a restorer in The Hague

When you would like to buy an antique or vintage item or piece of furniture, but is has some wear and tear, or is in need of some tender, love and care, or even a major restoration; ask Paul. He might be able to offer you his assistance.

As he says: “Restoring is preserving. Making a detailed plan before restoring a piece of furniture is not a luxury. The need of carefully planning a restoration has proven itself to me through years of experience. The technical part of restoring is a necessity and prolongs the lifespan. The finishing however is often a difficult matter. How to deal with this? Personally I prefer to keep the piece of furniture as close to the original as possible, beauty comes with the years and it is best to keep it that way. Neglect can however be so severe that a more rigorous treatment is necessary.”

Classical music just around the corner of the Antique and Book Market

On the Antique and Book Market in The Hague you can find antique, vintage and etnografic musical instruments, as violins and flutes, drums, or old sheet music, or antique and vintage records, vinyl and classical music albums, but you can also visit the Festival Classique The Hague 2014.

Festival Classique The Hague presents short concerts, on unique locations, with performances suitable for an audience from the ages of only several months to well over eighty years old.

The first edition of Festival Classique was held in 2006. Every year there is an entertaining and surprising program for all ages. None of the shows are off-the-shelf, each concert is made especially for the festival. A relaxed and friendly atmosphere is very important. The concerts do not last longer than one hour, there is no intermission and the presentations are done by people with a strong and personal connection with the story behind the concert.

There are preformances on unique locations. This can be the open air or at unexpected locations like a McDonald’s, a coffee shop or for instance in the museum Gevangenpoort.

This year the festival once again promises to be beautiful and inspiring. Will you be joining? Take a look at this year's program on the special website in English:
http://festivalclassique.nl/en

Festival Classique is an initiative from the AVRO and Amerborgh. The festival had more than 36.000 visitors in 2013, was broadcasted on live television and could also be enjoyed on live radio.

The 8th edition of the festival will take place from:

June 18 - June 22, 2014.

For children for example: KinderWaterConcert - The Journey of the Vagabond
During this concert you will go on a journey together with vagabonds! For them the world is one big playground. Pull pranks, have fun, make new friends and discover the world together, that’s what The Journey of the Vagabond is all about!
Date: Sunday June 22nd
Location: Hofvijver, the Royal Court pond, in the city centre, right next to the Antique- and Bookmarket on the Lange Voorhout
Time: 12.00 – 13.00
Composer: Nielsen – Aladdin Suites
Performers: The Hague Philharmonic and conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen

But on an other market day you can find peace and quiet on the long stretch of the Lange Voorhout, a step away from the short stretch where the buzz of the market is hardly heard, and there a soloist might treat you with his or her elegant playing.
